Its medicinal value is mainly as a topical ointment, promoting fast healing through its antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, astringent and vulnerary actions of its flower. In fact, calendula was a remedy used in the Civil and the first World War as a treatment for gangrene. Flowers can be brewed into a tea and are shown to have antispasmotic, lymphatic, cholagogue and emmenagogue actions. Self-seeding. Sow 5mm deep outdoors after last frost. Full sun-part shade in neutral to slightly acidic soil. Germination 1-2 weeks. Ht 18-24 inches.
