An heirloom of the Pennsylvania Dutch with small orange fruits that come wrapped in paper-like husks. Flavour is citrusy resembling that of a tangerine. Fully ripened fruits (all orange, with no green or yellow) are excellent in jams, pies, and sauces, and can be enjoyed fresh as a snack or in salads. Kept in the husk, the fresh fruits will last 3-4 weeks in cool dry conditions; before use the husk is removed. Although it is a perennial, in more northern areas it is grown as an annual like tomatoes. Start early indoors and transplant to the garden after spring frosts. 75-90 days from transplant.
